Who are we?

The Barefoot Eco Hotel & Villas is located on Hanimaadhoo, a preserved island in the northern Maldives.

Founded in 2014 by Swiss entrepreneur Christophe Groh—originally on the island to build social housing—it became the first 4-star hotel on a local island.

Guided by a deep respect for nature, our mission is rooted in sustainable tourism and the preservation of the Maldives’ unique biodiversity.

We celebrate Maldivian heritage and culture, offering guests an authentic experience and a taste of genuine island life. Inspired by a profound love for the Maldives, and in addition to our 64 rooms, we have recently built five traditional Heritage Villas on the hotel’s northern grounds—nestled among pristine vegetation.
The project was shaped by extensive research, island explorations, and the expertise of a renowned local architect. These villas were created to offer guests an experience that is even more authentic, private, and environmentally conscious. We take great pride in The Barefoot’s kind, friendly, and always-smiling staff. Our motto, “We love what we do for you,” reflects the passion that drives us.
